MURRAY STILL HOPES TO PLAY AT WIMBLEDON, PARIS OLYMPICS DESPITE SURGERY

Murray still hopes to play at Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics next month.

He decided against undergoing surgery to address a spinal cyst on June 22.

The former world No.1 will make a last-minute decision before he makes a statement.

The Wimbledon draw takes place on Friday.

“I feel that I deserve the opportunity to give it until the very last moment to make that decision,” Murray said.

“The rate that I’m improving just now, if that was to continue, then an extra 72 to 96 hours make a huge difference,” he added.

If Murray can’t play in men’s singles, there’s a better chance he can play in doubles with his brother Jamie.

That became possible as Wimble offers a later schedule for doubles matchs.

“Getting to play with Jamie in the doubles is something that obviously I have never done before,” he added.

ANDY LEANING MORE TO NOT PLAY BEYOND THE SUMMER

Furthermore, Andy Murray is leaning more toward not playing beyond the summer.

He said he is not looking beyond Pari, with a stint at the US Open in New York unlikely at the moment.

“All of the discussions and conversations that I’ve had with my team are that I’m not going to play past this summer,” Murray said.

“I have a family holiday booked the week after the Olympics,” he added.

Murray hinted that if he can manage to play both at Wimbledon and the Olympics, “that’s most likely going to be it, yeah.”

ANDY TRIES TO AVOID REPEAT OF QUEEN’S EARLY EXIT

Moreover, Murray is trying to avoid a repeat of his stint in Queens, where he took an early exit after the first round.

After he won his opening match, Murray was forced to withdraw.

This was after he experienced back pains down his right leg on June 19.

“Although the surgery is not a major surgery, the problem was a serious problem,” the two-time Wimbledon champion said.

“Because if the cyst continues to grow – obviously at Queen’s I basically lost the strength, coordination and everything in my right leg on my way to the court – you’re likely to have other complications as well,” he added.

That led to surgeons telling Murray to undergo the procedure after getting second opinions regarding his condition.

DJOKOVIC UNSURE AT WIMBLEDON STINT DESPITE TRAVELLING TO ENGLAND

Serbia’s Djokovic was still unsure at his Wimbledon stint this year despite traveling to England on Monday to practice at the All-England Club.

The world No.2 is coming off minor knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus early this month.

Furthermore, Djokovic clarified that will only play if he believes he can contend for the title.

“I didn’t come here to play a few rounds. If I know I can play close to my maximum or at maximum, then I’ll play,” the Serbian said.

“If not, then I’ll give somebody else a chance to play,” he added.

NOVAK LIKELY TO PLAY IN PARIS OLYMPICS, SAYS SERBIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE

Furthermore, the 37-year-old Djokovic is likely to play in the Paris Olympics for his home country, said the Serbian Olympic Committee.

The Serbian committee announced that Djokovic did confirm his participation in Paris.

It would be Djokovic’s fifth Olympic stint if he shows up swinging with his racquet in Paris.

The Olympic tennis men’s singles competition will be held at Roland Garros, the site of the French Open, starting on July 27.

Djokovic hopes to add a medal to his and his country’s trophy collection after he took the bronze in Beijing in 2008.

EMMA RADUCANU REKINDLES ‘LOVE FOR TENNIS’ AHEAD OF WIMBLEDON

Meanwhile, Emma Raducanu said she has “rekindled” her “love for tennis” as she gears up for Wimbledon.

The 21-year-old felt has passion for tennis has “been missing” for “the last few years.

Raducanu skipped the French Open to focus her preparation for the grass season.

She reached the semifinals of the Nottingham Open before losing to eventual winner Katie Boulter.

“It’s a nice feeling for me because it hasn’t always been the case,” Raducano told BBC TV.

“I’m very happy to have rekindled the love for tennis and just enjoying the challenges that come with it and not getting so down about it,” she added.

Raducanu spoke in April about feeling “mentally and emotionally exhausted” after winning the US Open in 2021.

However, things have changed after Nottingham, she recalled.

“I would say right before Nottingham it happened. I really feel like I’m in a lot better spirits on and off the court,” Raducanu said.

Furthermore, the former world No.1 will play in singles and doubles.

He will team up with newly crowned French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz, who is also entered in the men’s singles.

Spanish national team coach David Ferrer is looking forward to the Nadal-Alcaraz tandem in men’s doubles.

“One, pair, which I think everyone knows and was hoping for, is Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal and the second pair is yet to be decided,” Ferrer said.

MURRAY FAREWELL PLANS AT WIMBLEDON SET

Farewell plans for another former world No.1 Andy Murray at Wimbledon are set this year.

The 37-year-old in 2013 became the first British Wimbledon men’s singles champion since Fred Perry in 1936.

“We are ready and prepared but ultimately, it’s Andy’s decision,” All England Lawn Tennis Club chief executive Sally Bolton said.

“We will be very much led by him, and we can amend our plans accordingly,” she added.

The 20-year-old becomes the third-youngest Wimbledon champion in the Open Era and adds a second major title to his record after winning the US Open last year.

What happened

World No.1 Alcaraz prevailed after nearly five hours on Centre Court, and it was one of the best finals in ages.

Alcaraz came from a set down against arguably the greatest tennis player in history performing at the peak of his powers.

Nole was bidding to level Margaret Court for the most grand slam singles titles of all time and Roger Federer on eight for the most Wimbledon men’s singles titles.

Set 1

The Serbian ace produced a masterful first set as he wept clear of his opponent.

Djokovic converted two of his six break points to deliver an early statement. Alcaraz could not fight against such a strong and experienced Nole, who dropped serve just three times on his road to the final.

In the opening game, Nole faced just one break point in the set. The 20-year-old won 28 of 36 points at the net during the semi-final against Daniil Medvedev but struggled in the final, wining the point twice.

Set Two, Alcaraz 7-6(6)

However, Alcaraz stunned everyone as he appeared to settle and worked his way back into the contest.

Alcaraz became the first player to defeat Djokovic in a tie-break at a major since Enzo Couacaud in the second round of January’s Australian Open.

The Serbian dropped serve for the fourth time across his Wimbledon run. Still, it remained on course to notch his third break of Alcaraz’s serve in the following game, before crucially outlasting his younger opponent in a mesmerizing 29-shot rally when break point down at 1-2, 30/40.

Set Three, Alcaraz 6-1

Buoyed by his tie-break triumph, Alcaraz carried the momentum through to the third set as he continued showcasing his shotmaking repertoire. His forehand power and some stunning deft touches kept the pressure on Djokovic, who made 18 unforced errors in an uncharacteristic third-set performance.

Alcaraz had opened up a 3-1 lead with a single break when one of the games of this year’s tournament, featuring 13 deuces, played out across 27 breathtaking minutes on Centre Court. Alcaraz saved eight-game points and Djokovic six break points before the Spaniard converted his seventh to take a 4-1 lead and assume complete control of the set.

The end of the set was far less complicated for Alcaraz, who won eight of the final 10 points to move within one group of becoming just the fifth man in the Open Era to win multiple major titles before turning 21. His three breaks of Djokovic’s serve in the third set equaled the number of games the Serbian had dropped across his six previous matches this year at SW19, indicating how dialled in the 20-year-old was on return.

Set Four, Djokovic 6-3

Djokovic did not give up as he attempted for his 24th major, and the Serbian raised his game again in the fourth set of what was rapidly becoming an all-time classic final on Centre Court. He recovered from 15/40 to hold in the second game but then rediscovered his rock-solid form from the first set, breaking Alcaraz twice to recapture the momentum and set up a one-set shootout for the title.

Having dropped serve three times in the previous set, The upturn in Djokovic’s service game was key to him returning to the match. The Serbian saved both break points he faced to prevail in a set in which he struck just nine winners to Alcaraz’s 14.

Set Five, Alcaraz 6-4

With an opponent so used to dealing with high-pressure moments at the tail end of Grand Slam finals, Alcaraz faced a real test of his big-stage nerve on Centre Court. The Spaniard let slip a breakpoint in the opening game and then found himself under pressure in the rally at 30/40 down in the next game. At such a pivotal moment, Alcaraz’s athletic ability while chasing a wide ball came to his rescue, as he forced Djokovic to net a forehand drive volley on a high ball.

That persistence brought greater reward in the next game, as Alcaraz broke through himself for the crucial break of the final set. Frustrated, Djokovic struck the net post with his racquet and spent a few minutes shaking out his wrist as a consequence, and Alcaraz dropped just five further points on serve in the match as he completed a famous victory.

Feel free to drink water, or even champagne, but if it’s during a tennis match, you may have to think twice before popping one.

Wimbledon – Fans were asked not to pop bottles during serve as the umpire would like to keep it as silent as possible so that the player can fully concentrate.

More tennis updates here

According to ESPN, tens of thousands of champagne bottles are opened during Wimbledon every year, but Sunday, one chair umpire politely asked patrons to keep them corked, at least until the players on court had served.

What happened

Anastasia Potapova and Mirra Andreeva were in underway on Court 3 on Sunday, then one fan uncorked a bottle of champagne that burst the bubble in the third-round contest between the two Russians.

Australian umpire John Blom noticed the annoy that the fan’s act caused and quickly reacted:

“Ladies and gentlemen, please, if you are opening a bottle of champagne, don’t do it as the players are about to serve,” John Blom said over the microphone.

Potapova, who was about to serve, stopped to listen to the announcement before nodding her head in approval with a smile, amid scattered applause.

Eventually, 16 year old Mirra Andreeva defeated her compatriot Anastasia Potapova, 6-2 7-5 to reach the Wimbledon 4th round on debut despite no grass court experience.

It had happened before

In 2019, a similar announcement was made by an umpire when a champagne cork flew onto the court during a match between Benoit Paire and Jiri Vesely.

The All England Club’s conditions of entry to the grounds state that “all corked bottles, including bottles of champagne and sparkling wine, must be opened prior to being taken into the stands of any court.”

In an interview, the Australian professional tennis player told reporters he had been fit for the event but eventually released a statement on Instagram announcing his withdrawal.

“I’m really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year,” he wrote. “I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist.

“I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn’t have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon — I’ll be back.”

What happened

Struggled at times in the first set, but Alcaraz managed to beat Alex De Minaur 6-4, 6-4 for his fifth title of the year and 11th overall.

It was the 20-year-old’s first on grass, in only the third tournament of his young career on the surface.

He had to save two break points in the eighth game of the first set, broke in the next game and then served out for the set.

Alcaraz won the only break point of the second set, when De Minaur double faulted, and sealed the title on his first match point when the Australian sent a return long.

The victory moved the Spanish above the Serbian legend Novak Djokovic in the rankings and confirmed the US Open champion as a serious challenger to Nole’s crown at Wimbledon.

Alcaraz lost in the fourth round to Jannik Sinner last year.

Youngest men’s No. 1 seeds

Carlos Alcaraz will enter Wimbledon as the No. 1 seed and will be the second-youngest man to be seeded No. 1 at Wimbledon (based on age at the beginning of the tournament) since the Open Era began in 1968.

“The chances don’t change so much. I mean, Novak is coming to Wimbledon,” Alcaraz said. “Right now, I’m feeling better than the beginning of the week, that’s obvious.

“Of course, recovering the No. 1 before Wimbledon, it gives you extra motivation, it gives you extra confidence coming into Wimbledon. But it doesn’t change too much if I play Wimbledon as the No. 2 or the No. 1.”

Alcaraz will enter Wimbledon as the second-youngest man to be seeded No. 1 since the Open era began in 1968, after Boris Becker, who was 19, in 1987, according to ESPN Stats & Information data.

“It means a lot to have my name on the trophy,” Alcaraz said. “It was special to play here where so many legends have won. To see my name surrounded by the great champions is amazing.”

Alcaraz has won titles on hard, clay and grass this season, making him the youngest man to win tour-level titles on hard, clay and grass in the same year since Mats Wilander, who was 19, in 1983, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
