Rohit Sharma named India skipper at 2024 T20 World Cup

by Noe

Veteran top-order batter Rohit Sharma will lead India in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean and the USA in June.

The 36-year-old right-hander was named captain by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday.

Sharma in October 2023 became the first Indian batter to smash 50 One Day International sixes in a single calendar year.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah vouched for Sharma’s competence. He said India can contend for the title with Sharma leading the way.

“I want to promise you that in 2024 (T20 World Cup) in Barbados (venue for final) under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, we will hoist the Indian flag,” Shah said.

The BCCI official spoke at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on Wednesday. The stadium was renamed after veteran cricket administrator Niranjan Shah.

While Sharma’s captaincy is confirmed, the BCCI remains non-committal on veteran Virat Kohli. Kohli has missed three of the five Test matches between India and England due to personal reasons.

“Virat is not that kind of a player that he would ask for a leave without any reason,” Shah said. “We must back and trust our players.”
