Pant to serve as DC captain
The announcement only adds to Pant’s miraculous cricket comeback from a horrific car crash in December 2022.
“We are delighted to welcome Rishabh back as our captain. Grit and fearlessness have always dictated his brand of cricket, and not surprisingly, even his road to recovery.”
“I can’t wait to see him walk our team out once again as we look forward to a new season with renewed passion, vigor, and enthusiasm,” said DC chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal in a media release.
The BCCI officially declared the left-hand wicketkeeper-batter fit to play in the IPL.
Pant, 26, underwent a 14-month rehabilitation and recovery process from multiple injuries that he sustained in the car crash.
He missed all 2023 major tournaments, including the Indian Premier League and the ODI World Cup.
Delhi head coach Ricky Ponting said he feels relieved that Pant is 100% cleared to return to the tournament.
Ponting also added that Pant has boosted the team’s morale since joining the preseason camp in Visakhapatnam.
“We missed him incredibly last year. The whole tournament missed him. Rishabh brings so much energy to the team. He’s got that smile on his face. He’s hitting the ball as good as ever, and he tends to lift all of his teammates around him,” said Ponting.
The Delhi Capitals will kick off their first IPL 2024 match against Punjab Kings in Chandigarh on March 23.
