WOZNIACKI BLOWS LEAD, LOSES IN 3 SETS
The former world No.1 was one point away from finishing off Kalinina, who instead pulled off a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 victory.
The No.32-seeded Ukrainian took the last five games of the second set before she sustained the momentum in the third.
Wozniacki, who dropped to world No.129, was derailed again in her comeback run after she retired in 2020.
The Danish tennis star returned to the court last year after giving birth to two children and reached the quarterfinals at Indian Wells this month.
NISHIKORI DROPS OUT AGAINST OFNER
Ken Nishikori also joined Wozniacki on the sidelines after the Japanese former world No.4 yielded a 6-3, 6-4 setback to Sebastian Ofner.
Nishikori was playing for the first time at a higher level since Indian Wells in 2021.
“Everybody gets little nervous and you get a little bit tight, and things can completely change,” Nishikori said.
“You know, during the practice, you very relaxed and you hit the ball very clean. But it’s not going to happen during the match,” he added.
