DJOKOVIC WEIGHS OPTIONS OF GETTING COACH OR NOT
Djokovic is looking at all options – whether he will get a new coach or play without one for the first time after 20 years in his career.
The world No.1 is considering if he will replace Croatian coach Goran Ivanisevic, with whom he ended a five-year partnership last month.
Djokovic and Ivanisevic parted ways after the Serbian superstar was ousted in the third round at Indian Wells.
The 24-time Grand Slam winner was accommodated by former doubles world No.1 Nenad Zimonji at the Monte Carlo Masters this month.
However, Djokovic is considering whether he can play out the last stages of his career by himself.
“It’s not like I think I don’t need a coach at all. I think there’s always value in having that quality team,” the 37-year-old said.
DJOKOVIC PICKS OPTIONS AFTER ‘GOOD TIME’ WITH ZIMONJIC
Djokovic admitted having a “really good time” with Zimonjic at Monte Carlo as he discussed the matter at the Laureaus Awards.
“I had a really good time with Zimonjic… we’re talking about continuing. Let’s see, I’m going to make a decision in the next period,” the Serbian said.
Djokovic will have the time to decide, as he also announced that he is skipping the Madrid Open but intends to play in Rome.
His priority is prepare his body in good condition for the French Open and the Paris Olympics.
“I’m preparing my body to be ready, particularly for Roland Garros, Wimbledon, the Olympic Games, and the US Open,” Djokovic said.
“That’s the most important block of the year for me. I’m intending on playing in Rome,” he added.
ALCARAZ CAUTIOUS IN MADRID OPEN AFTER RETURN FROM INJURY
Alcaraz, meanwhile, is cautious about his upcoming stint at the Madrid Open, as he admitted not having fully recovered from his right arm injury.
The Spaniard world No.3 skipped Monte Carlo and Barcelona due to the injury, saying he would be happy to play “three or four matches” in Madrid.
“I don’t want to say 100% that I’ll play. Today, I trained with a little more intensity and things went quite well,” Alcaraz said.
“For me, it’s really important to be at 100% here in this tournament. With the sensations that I have right now, I’d be happy to play three or four matches,” he added.
Top seed and world No.2 Jannik Sinner opens his Madrid Open stint against fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego.
Sinner currently has a 25-2 record this year but has not gotten past the third round in Madrid.
