NADAL, MURRAY EXTEND PARIS OLYMPICS RUN WITH WINS IN MEN’S DOUBLES
Nadal and Murray extended their Paris Olympics run after coming through with wins in their respective men’s doubles matches at Roland Garros.
The 22-time Grand Slam winner combined with Carlos Alcaraz to beat Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands, 6-4, 6-7(2), 10-2.
Moreover, the win moved Nadal and Alcaraz to the quarterfinals while prolonging the former’s campaign in Paris.
“A dream come true for me, playing on the same side of the net with Rafa (Nadal), learning from him,” said Alcaraz, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion.
“It’s unbelievable… I’m trying to enjoy my time with him,” he added.
On the other hand, Nadal and Alcaraz played with coordination at the net, as if they had played together for a long time.
“We are trying to enjoy (ourselves) as much as possible. We are not doubles players, so we are not used to playing doubles,” Nadal said.
“The only way to make that work well is to play with happiness, with energy, and with high energy. We have a good relationship outside the court, so that helps,” he added.
On the other hand, Nadal and Alcaraz will next face No.4 seed Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram of the United States on Wednesday.
MURRAY STAVES OFF PLANNED RETIREMENT WITH ANOTHER MEN’S DOUBLES WIN
Moreover, Murray staved off a planned retirement from tennis after winning his doubles match with Dan Evans for Great Britain.
Murray and Evans posted a 6-3, 6-7(8), (11-9) victory over Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen of Belgium to advance to the quarterfinals.
Furthermore, the Belgians nearly ended Murray’s tennis career right there as they reached match point.
However, the British pair held sway and responded well to survive and advance.
Up next for Murray and Evans are either Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul of the US or Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.
Incidentally, Murray tried to end his Olympic and tennis career overall with a band and add a medal to his golds in London (2012) and Rio (2016) and a men’s doubles silver with Laura Robson also in Rio.
SWIATEK OUSTS CHINESE FOE TO REACH LAST EIGHT
Furthermore,m women’s world No.1 Iga Swiatek dominated No.52 Wang Xiyu of China, 6-2, 6-4, to reach the last eight.
The Polish superstar impressed the Court Philippe Chatrier crowd with a scintillating performance put away Wang.
“I was aware that she (Wang) can play great tennis. But I wanted to really be intense and push in the right moments. Also, be patient and not slow down,” Swiatek said.
“So I think my intensity worked and in important moments I was the one that was more solid,” she added.
Moreover, the win sets up Swiatek for a matchup against No8 seed Danielle Collins of the US.
Collins advanced into the next round after she eliminated Camila Osorio of Colombia, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
