ALCARAZ TO MISS SHANGHAI SEMIS AFTER WINNING STREAK SNAPPED

Expect Alcaraz to miss the Shanghai Open semis after his 12-match winning streak was ended by Tomas Machac, 7-6(5), 7-5.

Furthermore, the Spanish world No.3 lost after learning of compatriot and idol Rafael Nadal’s retirement announcement early Thursday.

However, Alcaraz insisted the news didn’t have an impact on his loss to Machac.

“It is a really difficult thing, really difficult news for everybody, and even tougher for me,” the four-time major winner said.

“I look up to him. Proudly, thanks to him, I really wanted to become a professional tennis player,” he added.

Moreover, world No.33 Machac had Alcaraz as his second top-five opponent victim as the Czech player advanced to the semifinals.

“I knew that the level of my tennis would be great because I am playing the best right now, for sure,” Machac said.

“With these types of players, I have to play this level; otherwise, it’s 6-2, 6-3 (and) you go home. There is no other option,” he added.

SINNER SWEEPS MEDVEDEV TO TEST MACHAC

Moreover, Sinner swept No.5 seed Daniil Medvedev, 6-1, 6-4, to boost his title chances with Alcaraz gone.

Furthermore, the Italian world No.1 evened to 7-7 in his head-to-head matchup against Medvedev as he reached his fifth ATP Masters semis this season.

Obviously, I’m very happy with how I handled today and this match,” Sinner said.

“It felt like he had a bit of shoulder pain and couldn’t hit his forehand as well as he wished to,” he added.

Sinner has won the past eight matches against Medvedev to close in on the Russian in their matchup.

RADUCANU DOWN WITH FOOT INJURY, WITHDRAWS FROM TWO EVENTS

Meanwhile, Emma Raducanu was downed by an ongoing foot injury that forced her to skip two more tournaments in China.

Furthermore, the 21-year-old pulled out of her Korea Open quarterfinal match against Daria Kasatkina last month due to ligaments in her foot.

Moreover, the 2021 US Open champion withdrew from the China Open before deciding to skip the Ningbo Open and the Guangzhou Open.

Raducanu will continue her recovery for at least two more weeks.

She hopes to make a return for the Hong Kong Open set on October 28.
