Carsley still not applying as full-time coach for England

Carsley, 50, has managed England’s under-21 squad since 2021 and led them to the European U21 Championship title last year.

He was appointed interim coach for England’s September Nations League fixture after Gareth Southgate resigned following their EURO 2024 final loss.

Speaking after England’s 2-0 win over Ireland in the Nations League, Carsely said he has yet to apply for a full-time job.

“I didn’t formally apply for it,” Carsley told talkSPORT on Saturday. “Because I’ve been with the U21s.

“I’m really happy doing my job, but I’m an employee of the Football Association (FA), and I was asked to take the senior team, which is a privilege. It was the proudest moment of my career so far.

“Really honoured with the chance to manage the senior team. I’m in a really fortunate position. I’m on the inside and I can see how much potential this team’s got.”

England deserves ‘world-class’ manager

Carsley faced his first criticism when England suffered a shocking 2-1 loss to Greece at Wembley on Thursday.

The U21 coach stated that the Three Lions deserve a “world-class” manager.

Nonetheless, Carsley expressed that he felt privileged to be given the opportunity to manage the senior side.

“I’ve said all along, it’s one of the best jobs in world football, there’s not many jobs where you’ve got a chance of winning, I believe the coach that comes in has got a really good chance of winning and we deserve the best one that’s out there,” he said.

“This job deserves a world class coach who has won trophies and I am still on the path to that.”

“I keep saying the same thing. My remit was six games and I’m happy with that,” he added. “This is a privileged position. I’m really enjoying it but I didn’t enjoy the last two days. I’m not used to losing in an England team, I don’t take losing well.

“People are always going to try and put their chips on one side. I’m in the middle.”
