MEDVEDEV OUSTED AFTER LOSING TO POPYRIN IN PARIS
Medvedev was ousted after he lost to Popyrin, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4), in a tense second-round match.
Furthermore, the Russian No.4 seed lost to the Australian for the first time after three straight wins in their head-to-head matchup.
Moreover, Medvedev suffered his third-straight opening-round loss in Paris, and he has yet to win a title this season.
Popyrin was initially upset by a bad line umpire call in the eighth game of the deciding before he recovered to finish off Medvedev.
“Stuff like that, I’m trying to let it fire me up rather than put me down,” the 25-year-old Australian said.
“It was tough to take, but it definitely fired me up after that,” he added.
ZVEREV, DIMITROV HURDLE FOES TO ADVANCE
Moreover, Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov hurdled their respective foes to advance into the next round.
Furthermore, Zverev sealed a 7-6(2), 6-3 win over Tallon Griekspoor by saving a set point.
The eighth-seeded Dimitrov rallied to get past Tomas Martin Etcheverry, 6-7(9), 6-3, 7-5.
The result enabled him to stay in contention for a place in the ATP finals.
“Everyone wants to empty their tank completely. I would give a lot to be in (the Finals),” Dimitrov said.
DRAPER ELIMINATES FRITZ; RUNE ADVANCES
Furthermore, British Jack Draper eliminated No.5 seeded American Taylor Fritz, 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-4.
Moreover, Holger Rune joined Draper in the next round.
The former Paris Masters champion saw off Alexander Bublik, 6-4, 6-2.
Bublik smashed his racket after hitting a double fault in the ninth game of the opening set to drop his serve.
Later, he calmed down and gave the racket to a fan in the stands.
