Gyokeres surpasses Haaland in Nation League’s scoring list
The 26-year-old entered the game against Azerbaijan with five goals from five Nations League games.
Gyokeres ended the evening with a total of nine goals, two ahead of Haaland’s seven.
The Swedish forward officially overtook Haaland when he scored his third goal of the night in the 58th minute.
The Sporting CP star capped off his remarkable performance when he added his fourth goal of the game soon after.
“I want to score a lot of goals”
Gyokeres scored his first goal in the 25th minute from a cross by Dejan Kulusevski, who had converted Sweden’s opening goal.
His second came in the 37th minute, fired in from a tight angle after being forced wide.
“I’m hungry and I want to score a lot of goals,” Gyokeres said. “I feel like I’m in good shape. I’m often in the right place and I try to finish in the area.”
“We needed to win by a certain goal difference and we did. It was a good night. It’s fun to score so many goals.”
Haaland was already the top scorer in the Nations League going into the final evening of games.
The Manchester City striker had netted his seventh goal for Norway, which included a hat trick in their 5-0 win over Kazakhstan on Sunday.
