Simeone makes LaLiga history
Simeone’s 700th game with Atletico ended in a 2-1 comeback victory over Deportivo Alaves at the Metropolitano Stadium on Saturday.
Alaves took an early lead from the penalty spot, but Antoine Griezmann equalised in the 76th minute with a spot kick of his own.
Second-half substitute Alexander Sorloth completed the home side’s come-from-behind win with an 86th minute goal.
Atletico moved up to second in LaLiga, four points behind leaders Barcelona.
Simeone turns emotional
Simeone took charge of Atletico in 2011 and has since transformed it into a winning club in Spain’s top league.
Under Simeone, the club has won two LaLiga, two Europa Leagues, one Copa del Rey, and reached two Champions League finals.
When asked about his long-term future with Atlético, the Argentine became emotional as he expressed his deep love for the club.
“I am living the moment. My players are working hard and interpreting what we need and want,” Simeone said.
“I am calm. I am at peace, and I am in the place where I want,” he said.
The 54-year-old added, while his voice broke: “I love, I love the place where I am. And that’s it, ciao.”
Simeone is under contract until June 2027.
