ALCARAZ TOPPLES MEDVEDEV TO CLAIM MEN’S TITLE
Alcaraz bucked a twisted right ankle to beat Daniil Medvedev, 7-6(5), 6-1, in the finals to hoist the men’s singles crown.
It was the second-straight BNP Paribas Open title for the Spanish world No.2, who clinched his first title since hoisting the Wimbledon trophy last year.
“Winning a Master 1000 again, a really important tournament to win, gives you motivation to keep going,” Alcaraz said.
The Spaniard outlasted reigning Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals, to go all the way.
SWIATEK WINS WITH ZENDAYA, HOLLAND IN ATTENDANCE
Swiatek needed just over an hour to beat Maria Sakkari, 6-4, 6-0, to claim the women’s singles title.
The 22-year-old Polish superstar repeated her feat in the 2022 finals, where she also defeated Sakkari, 6-4, 6-1.
Swiatek won amid a star-studded crowd that included celebrity couple Tom Holland and Zendaya and Oscar winner Charlize Theron.
Zendaya will play professional tennis player Tashi Duncan in the upcoming film “Challengers.”
Swiatek and Zendaya posed for pictures after the match.
