Arsenal thrashed Chelsea 5-0 in a dominant mid-week Premier League game and a London derby like no other.
Arsenal 5-0 Chelsea
Arsenal delivered a sensational performance to thrash London rivals Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium to move three points clear at the top of the Premier League.
The Gunners were dominant, aside from occasional Chelsea chances on the counter-attack in the first half. However, given the opportunities they had to extend the lead, they still went into the break with a surprising 1-0 lead.
Second half was crucial for the home side and braces from former Chelsea star Kai Havertz and right-back Ben White secured a 5-0 win.
Mikel Arteta’s side had thrashed rivals Chelsea, who is being managed by former Tottenham Hotspur’s boss Pochettino, 10 years on from a 6-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, and while they could not match the same scoreline Arteta suffered as a player, they did break a club record in the win.
Arsenal record biggest-ever victory over Chelsea
Arsenal’s 5-0 victory over Chelsea was not only their biggest in Premier League history but the biggest any Arsenal side have ever recorded over the Blues.
This smashes a record set by Arsenal in November 1930, nearly 94 years ago, in which they recorded a 5-1 win away at Chelsea.
Since then, Arsenal recorded a 5-2 win over Chelsea at Highbury in 1979, and their biggest Premier League win came in 2016 with a 3-0 thrashing at the Emirates.
Forgettable day for Chelsea
As if it has not been bad enough for the Blues this season.
Chelsea have broken their record for the most Premier League goals conceded in a season following their humiliating 5-0 defeat at Arsenal.
Moreover, the heavy defeat means Chelsea have conceded 57 goals in the league this season – the most they’ve ever shipped in a single Premier League campaign – and they still have six games to play.
The most they had ever conceded was 55, which they did in 1994/95 (when there were 42 games instead of the usual 38) and 1996/97.
In 2023/24, Chelsea have kept just six clean sheets and rank 13th for most goals conceded – only Brentford, Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, West Ham, Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United have a worse defensive record.
Tuesday night’s result was also their worst-ever loss to Arsenal in their 209 clashes.
