City now in a “dark place”
Phil Foden’s opener in the fourth minute was quickly overshadowed by Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres, who had a hat-trick performance for Sporting.
Pep Guardiola’s side has now lost three straight games in all competitions for the first time since 2018.
“In the beginning of the second half, we just gave them too many opportunities to be there and to score goals,” the Portugal midfielder said.
“Disappointing, because we’re a bit in a dark place right now, and everything looks to be going the wrong way even when we play well.”
“Definitely, we need to look inside, check what we’re not doing well and start being better very quickly. Otherwise it will be difficult to come back from these losses.”
“I like this challenge”
This marked City’s heaviest defeat since 2020 under Guardiola.
Adding to their troubles, the reigning Premier League champions are dealing with an injury crisis this season.
19-year-old center-back Jahmai Simpson-Pusey was called up due to City’s fitness issues.
Erling Haaland’s poor finishing was also evident, as the Norwegian striker hit the bar with a second-half penalty and missed several chances to extend the lead in the first half.
City is currently second in the table, two points behind leaders Liverpool.
Despite the setback, the Spanish manager remains optimistic that they can find a solution to their problems.
“Now is the difficult moment in terms of results but I want to be here. I want to fight and not give up,” Guardiola said.
“I like this challenge as a manager I have ahead of me. Who wants to follow us will be there.”
