BROOS TO RETIRE AS BAFANA BAFANA COACH AFTER WORLD CUP, SAYS ‘CONTRACT WILL BE FINISHED’
Expect Broos to retire as Bafana Bafana coach after the World Cup, saying that his “contract will be finished” at that time.
Furthermore, the 73-year-old Belgian coach was revered for leading the Bafana Bafana to third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Moreover, Broos felt his 40-year involvement in football and his advanced age is enough basis for him to finally call it quits.
“The decision is made. After the World Cup, I will stop. My contract will be finished, and I will stop as a coach,” Broos said.
“I’ve been in football for nearly 40 years, and I’m 73. There comes a moment when you have to stop. I won’t die on the bench,” he added.
BAFANA BAFANA NEEDS TO FORMALIZE WORLD CUP 2026 ENTRY TO REALIZE BROOS’ RETIREMENT GOALS
The Bafana Bafana needs to formalize its entry at the World Cup 2026 through qualifiers to realize Broos’ retirement goals.
Moreover, the former Belgian forward was named South Africa’s head coach in 2021 after he was appointed as Cameroon’s national football team manager in 20212.
Furthermore, he previously coached Greek club Panathinaikos in 2008, Trabzonspor in 2009, Zulte Warege and Zulte Waregem.
“I have been in football since I was 19, first as a professional player and then as a coach. I think when I stop next year, I can be at home with my wife and drink coffee,” Broos said.
“But I don’t want to work every day anymore. That’s for sure,” he added.

ADVISOR ROLE AN OPTION FOR BELGIAN COACH
An advisor role remains an option for the Belgian coach, but he will focus first on his what’s in store for him in the next few months.
Furthermore, Broos will evaluate his goalkeepers in South Africa’s upcoming friendlies against Tanzania on Friday and Mozambique on Tuesday.
Moreover, the coach is committed to formalize the Bafana Bafana’s entry to the World Cup 2026 main tournament to fulfill his promise to retire after the event.
“Football will always be there. But you never know. Maybe I can be an advisor for South Africa or another team or whatever,” Broos said.
“First of all, I will focus on September and October, then on December, the AFCON. That’s the only thing I want now, and then we will see afterwards,” he added.
