BAILEY NOT PLAYING FOR JAMAICA’s COPA SQUAD DESPITE HALLGRIMSSON CALL-UP
The 26-year-old Bailey is not joining Jamaica for Copa America 2024 despite a call-up by Hallgrimsson.
“Misleading information,” the Aston Villa right winger said on Instagram.
Bailey’s agent, Craig Butler, is backing his client’s statement.
“Leon Bailey has stated that he is taking a break from the Jamaica national team for his mental health and to spend time with his family,” Butler said.
“His position has not changed. We kindly ask that you respect his wishes at this time,” he added.
BAILEY INCLUDED IN 26-MAN COPA AMERICA ROSTER DESPITE MARCH SUSPENSION
Furthermore, the Kingston native is included in Jamaica’s 26-man roster despite Hallgrimsson suspending Bailey for National League matches in March.
Bailey is insisting that Jamaica in international competitions was like giving a gift to his country.
“Jamaica’s national team is not doing anything for me. Jamaica’s national team is not going to give me exposure,” the Aston Villa star said.
“I am shining light on the national team by playing overseas and representing as a Jamaican all the time,” he added.
Additionally, Bailey will finish his Aston Villa campaign this season with 14 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.
SKIPPER BLAKE MIGHT SKIP COPA CAMPAIGN DUE TO KNEE INJURY
Meanwhile, Hallgrimsson might not only Bailey but also goalkeeper and skipper Andre Blake.
Blake, like Bailey, was also named to Jamaica’s Copa squad but might not play due to a knee injury.
Jahmali White (El Paso Locomotive FC), Coniah Boyce-Clarke (Reading), and Shaquan Davis (Mount Pleasant) were the other goalkeepers named to the squad.
Furthermore, Shamar Nicholson (Clermont), Michail Antonio (West Ham), and Demarai Gray (Al Ettifaq) were the other forwards who may be asked to step up in Bailey’s absence.
