LOZANO INFUSES YOUTH WITH U23 PLAYERS IN MEXICO PROVISIONAL LINEUP
Lozano infused youth with almost half his 31-man provisional lineup being 23 years old or below.
The manager is looking at Mexico’s upcoming Copa America 2024 stint and the 2026 World Cup.
Furthermore, five of Lozano’s forwards have combined for only 13 international goals.
Additionally, one of them is Feyenoord forward Santiago Gimenez, who has collected 38 goals for his squad in the Eredivisie over two seasons since moving from Cruz Azul in 2022.
Furthermore, Alexis Vega made the squad after returning to Toluca in January.
Pumas duo Cesar Huerta, Guillermo Martinez, and Julian Quinones of America also made the team.
ALVAREZ, MALAGAN, SANCHEZ TO LEAD 31-MAN ROSTER
West Ham United star Edson Alvarez should be one of the leaders for Lozano in this souped-up Mexican team.
Furthermore, the 26-year-old former Ajax midfielder has tallied 76 appearances for Mexico, with his experience sure to rub off on his younger teammates.
Luis Malagon brings a ton of experience as the team’s goalkeeper.
The 27-year-old America goalkeeper in Liga MX will make only his fifth appearance in a major international competition.
Lozano expects Malagon to step up after Mexican legend Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa was left out of the roster.
Additionally, Pachuca standout Erick Sanchez will also lend his exploits at midfield along with Quinones and Gimenez.
LOZANO MIXES EUROPEAN-BASED PLAYERS IN COPA PROVISIONAL ROSTER
Three European-based players were added by Lozano to provide a defensive presence to his team.
Cesar Montes is expected to bring his defensive exploits from Espanyol and Almeria as a veteran center-back.
Genoa’s Johan Vasquez is expected to blend well with Montes, as the duo played together in the Under-23 squad.
Ajax’s Jorge Sanchez, who was on loan with Porto last season, also made Lozano’s roster.
Furthermore, Israel Reyes (America), Victor Guzman (Monterrey), Jesus Orozco (Chivas), Brian Garcia (Toluca), Bryan Gonzalez (Pachuca), and Alexis Pena (Necaxa) comprise Lozano’s backline.
