DJOKOVIC SURVIVES ANOTHER LONG FRENCH OPEN MATCH
After coming out of a match that ended in the early hours of Sunday morning, Djokovic outlasted another opponent on Monday.
The world No.1 needed another five sets to oust world No.23 Francisco Cerundolo, 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Djokovic overcame a set down and a break in the match to notch his record 370th win at a Grand Slam match.
However, the win might come with a cost as Djokovic injured his right knee and his fitness for the quarterfinals is uncertain.
“I don’t know until Tuesday if I can step out and play,” the Serbian superstar said.
“I hope so… let’s see what happens,” he added.
Djokovic is scheduled to face No.7 Casper Ruud in the last eight on Wednesday.
SABALENKA WINS ANEW, DUMPS NAVARRO TO ADVANCE TO QUARTERS
Sabalenksa continued her dominant run at Roland Garros after posting a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Emma Navarro.
The Belarussian basked at the return of the sun at Porte d’Auteuil southwest of Paris as she cruised through the last eight.
“When the sun is out, I play with a lot more happiness,” Sabalenka said.
The No.2 seed is scheduled to take on unseeded Mirra Andreeva, who eliminated Varvara Gracheva, 7-5, 6-2.
“I listen, but honestly, once I step onto the court I don’t remember anything. That’s how I always play, the 17-year-old Russian said.
RYBAKINA, PAOLINI HURDLE FOES TO ARRANGE QUARTERS FACEOFF
In other women’s singles matches, Elena Rybakina ousted Elina Svitolina, 6-4, 6-3.
The women’s world No.4 will next face No.12 Jasmine Paolini for a place in the semifinals.
Paolini defeated Elina Avanesyan, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
“She’s a tough opponent,” Rybakina said of Paolini.
“She’s moving well and hitting the ball quite heavily. I’ll have to focus on my footwork,” she added.
