Guardiola told Phillips that he was overweight after returning from World Cup duty with England in December 2022.
The English midfielder said Guardiola’s comments was “a big knock on my confidence”.
“He was right to do so, but there are different ways to go about it,” Phillips said.
“It was just a misunderstanding, and I think he was very frustrated with me coming back 1.5kg over my weight target.”
Guardiola apologized for his public jibe during the press conference before City’s game against Brentford in the Premier League.
“Yeah, I’m sorry. Once in eight years is not bad., but I’m so sorry. I apologized to him,” he said.
“I spoke to him before [commenting]. I never, ever don’t speak to the team before I say something here, or the player in that case.”
This explains Phillips’ absence in the Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Liverpool.
The 28-year-old agreed to a loan move to West Ham until the end of the season after only starting twice with Man City.
Unfortunately, the struggle continues for Phillips, as he made two high-profile errors that led to the concession of goals.
