SINGH SEES KOHLI, SHARMA PROLONG CRICKET CAREERS BASED ON THEIR FITNESS
Furthermore, Singh sees Kohli and Sharma prolong their cricket careers based on their fitness in the sport.
Moreover, the retired Indian cricket legend and current commentator cited Kohili as “probably the fittest guy in the team” who can keep up with youngsters.
“He (Kohli) is probably the fittest guy in the team. You ask any 19-year-old competing with Virat (on fitness). Virat will beat him,” Singh told Press Trust of India videos.
“Virat will beat him. He is that fit. I believe Virat and Rohit (Sharma) have a lot of cricket left in them and it is entirely up to them,” he added.
Singh cited Kohli can play “another five years,” while Sharma “can easily play for two more years” of international cricket.
Incidentally, the 35-year-old Kohli and the 37-year-old Sharma have announced their retirement in the international Twenty20 International (T20I) format after playing for India in the recent 2024 T20 World Cup.
INDIA MAY STILL NEED KOHLI, SHARMA IN TEST CRICKET, SINGH SAYS
Moreover, India may still need Kohli and Sharma in the Test cricket format should both still want to play longer, Singh says.
“Red ball cricket, you really need these two guys (Kohli and Sharma) to play a little bit more than what people are asking. You need experience in all formats whether its limited overs cricket and Test cricket,” he added.
Furthermore, the 44-year-old former off-spin bowler reminded selectors to pick players based on performance, skill, and fitness regardless if they’re senior or younger cricketers.
“Selectors need to see that if someone is not performing well, they should be dropped, whether they are senior player or juniors,” Singh said.
“But as long as everyone is fit, they should be able to get selected in the team,” he added.
The legendary off-spin bowler also cited cricketers like Riyan Parag, Yashavi Jaiswal, and Shubman Hill currently playing well either for their pro teams but also India.
‘YOUNGSTERS HAVE WAY MORE HUNGER THAN SENIORS,’ SAYS HARBHAJAN
Furthermore, youngsters may have way more hunger than seniors as the former has yet to establish themselves in the sport.
“I always believe that youngsters have much more hunger than the seniors. If you play for 15 years your hunger a little bit comes down,” he said.
“If you play for 15 years, your hunger a little bit comes down. Great to see Riyan Parag getting the opportunities and the way Yashavi Jaiswal is coming up,” Singh added.
Moreover, India is coming off a tough 0-2 loss to Sri Lanka in the One Day International (ODIs) format.
“It was one of those things. Sometimes you win it, sometimes you lose it. It’s sports after all,” Singh said.
“All teams go through these periods. You play well but you still don’t win. I will give credit to Sri Lanka. They played well,” he added.
