ICC MULLS CHANGE IN POINTS SYSTEM FOR WTC 2025-27 CYCLE
The ICC mulls changes in the points system for the WTC’s 2025-27 cycle when it gathers for a meeting in April.
Furthermore, the council aims to give more weight to major wins, particularly overseas, for teams joining in the WTC’s next cycle.
Moreover, India’s five-away Test matches against England in June will mark the first event under the WTC cycle.
A new report from Telegraph on Thursday said a new bonus system will be rewarded for teams with innings victories for a win above a certain margin like 100 runs.
This differs to the normal rules where a team winning by a small margin or by innings gets 12 points, six points for a tie, and four points for a draw.
TEAMS CITE NEED TO GIVE ‘MORE WEIGHT’ TO WINS OVER MAJOR TEAMS, SAYS WTC
Teams have cited in the past the need to give “more weight” to wins over the major teams, according to the WTC in its past consultations.
Moreover, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is offering more bonus points for landslide victories.
Furthermore, a source with knowledge of the matter told Press Trust of India that extra points would also be considered by teams winning over major teams like England, India, and Australia.
“In fact, issues such as giving bonus points for innings wins etc has been in continuous discussion from the beginning of the WTC, as many teams felt that due weight is not getting for wins against big teams,” the source told PTI.
“So, such topics have been a part of discussions, and this could again come up for deliberations,” the source added.
EXTRA POINTS BY TEAMS FOR WINS AWAY FROM HOME ALSO CONSIDERED
Extra points, the source continued, are also being considered to be given by the ICC for teams winning away from home.
Furthermore, a former India player, who spoke to PTI on condition of anonimity, welcomes the ICC’s plans.
Moreover, he explained that teams will be given extra motivation to work harder and get road wins especially in hostile venues.
“Yeah, it’s a good move if it really happens. The teams will be more motivated to go for results, as we could see some exciting games,” the ex-India cricketer said.
“Yeah, it will be a motivating factor for, you know, those ‘smaller’ teams, Look, when New Zealand beat India last year, it was a historic win for them as not many teams came here and beat us,” he added.
