WHY SRH TAPPED CUMMINS AS NEW TEAM CAPTAIN
Irfan Pathan wondered why SRH made a sudden change from South African Aiden Markram to Australia’s World Cup-winning skipper Pat Cummins. Cummins is now the fourth SRH captain in the last three years.
“What is SRH thinking? They’ve made a big move here. If Cummins is made captain, what about Markram?” Pathan asked. “You gave him captaincy just for one year, so wouldn’t you want to back him? That’s a big question.
Markram was the SRH captain only for the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season before the club turned to Cummins. Cummins was signed in the IPL auctions in December last year.
PATHAN NOT SOLD ON CUMMINS’ CREDENTIALS
Pathan admitted Cummins may have played a big part in Australia winning the World Cup. However, the Indian cricketer doesn’t see other qualities Cummins has beyond what Markram has.
“When it comes to T20 leadership, there’s nothing. His (Cummins) performance isn’t the greatest in T20 cricket and his IPL numbers aren’t decent either,” Pathan told Star Sports.
“Forget leadership, how will Cummins perform as a bowler? That remains to be seen,” he added.
