It was an uneventful end for Klinsmann, who served as South Korea’s coach on February 27, 2023. However, the KFA terminated his contract on February 16 this year, citing the German’s failure to demonstrate leadership.”
Klinsmann was at the helm when South Kora was eliminated in the semi-final at the recent Asian Cup. Hwang is pressed to prepare the team for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
TOUGH TASK AWAITS HWANG
The 55-year-old Hwang is remembered for helping South Korea’s under-23 team win the gold in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. As a player, Hwang was part of the 2002 World Cup squad under Dutch coach Guus Hiddink that reached the semi-finals.
The reported in-fighting between captain Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur and Lee Kang-in of Paris St Germain is just one of the challenges awaiting Hwang.
The new coach hopes to steer South Korea to new heights in the 2026 World Cup qualifier in Qatar in April.
