Tebas wants “to eliminate” Club World Cup

Tebas said last week the tournament is “completely absurd”, and he doubled down on his criticism after watching 25 minutes of Chelsea’s 2-0 win over LAFC, which he compared to a friendly.

“My objective is that there will be no more Club World Cups, I’m very clear about that,” he said during an event at the ESADE Business School in Madrid.

“There is no room for it. There is no need for another competition that moves money towards the [same] clubs and players. The model affects the entire ecosystem of national leagues, especially in Europe, and there’s no more money in the world of audiovisual rights.”

“We have to maintain the ecosystem we have already and eliminate it. Keep [the Club World Cup] as it was before, when it was played basically over one weekend and that was that. There are no available dates.”

“I saw a bit of the Chelsea game and it looked like a preseason friendly. I didn’t see any intensity, at least for the 25 minutes I watched.”

FIFPRO concludes players need “four-week break”

The Club World Cup, currently being held across the United States, kicked off on June 14 with a goalless draw between Inter Miami and Al Ahly.

The quadrennial tournament runs until July 13, when the final will take place.

This expanded edition features 32 teams, including two from LaLiga — Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

A FIFPRO study concluded that a four-week off-season break should be mandatory for professional soccer players.

“With the World Cup coming in America next season [2026], it’s an even bigger competition — more teams, probably 1,200 athletes in one competition,” he said.

“So the calendar is becoming exhausting and we have more injuries… The players can’t put on a good spectacle if they are not fresh.”
