Lewandowski scores 100 Champions League goals
Lewandowski’s opening penalty against Brest not only set Barcelona on course for a 3-0 victory over Brest, the previously unbeaten club, but it also marked his 100th goal in the Champions League.
The Poland international then added his 101th goals in second-half stoppage time.
The 36-year-old has reached 100 goals in an incredible 125 appearances across stints with Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona.
Lewandowski became the third footballer to score 100 or more Champions League goals, joining the elite ranks of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Ronaldo tops the all-time scoring list with 140 goals, followed by Messi with 129.
Winning is important
Despite the historic feat, Lewandowski emphasized that he wants his goals to contribute to more victories for Barcelona.
“I am very happy, it’s a lovely number to bring up. Years ago I did not think I could score more than 100 goals in the Champions League. To join Messi and Ronaldo … I guess they are good, right?” Lewandowski told Movistar.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, who also worked with Lewandowski at Bayern Munich, praised the forward’s achievement.
“For me the most important thing is that we try to win every game, if I can score, then that’s the perfect solution,” he added.
“I know him also two years from Munich; there he also broke every record you can break. Now he’s also scoring. It’s important for us. But the whole team is supporting him. The other players will help him score the goals,” Flick said.
