The Mexico vs. USA final saw El Tri claim the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup title on Sunday with a pulsating 2-1 victory over the hosts.

MEXICO VS USA FINAL HAS EL TRI RELY ON JIMENEZ, ALVAREZ TO TAKE DOWN HOSTS

The Mexico vs. USA final became a football treat for fans but not for the home crowd, as the El Tri snatched the crown before more than 70,000 fans at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Furthermore, Chris Richards opened the scoring for the hosts in the fourth minute before Raul Jimenez used a left-foot shot over USMNT goalkeeper Matthew Freese in the 27th minute.

Moreover, Edson Alvarez dove for a header off a free kick, giving Mexico the 2-1 lead in the 77th minute.

The El Tri were not outnumbered in support despite being a visiting team, as they were cheered by some 70% of the pro-Mexico crowd at the stadium.

This may have led the visitors to control 60% of the match’s ball possession.

Additionally, Mexico also tallied 12 corner kicks compared to none for the USMNT.

JIMENEZ CELEBRATES 42ND INTL GOAL, PAYS TRIBUTE TO DIOGO JOTA AFTER GOAL

Jimenez celebrated his 42nd international goal by paying tribute to Portuguese forward Diogo Jota.

Moreover, Jota was killed along with his brother Andre Silva in a car crash on Thursday.

The 34-year-old Jimenez grabbed a Mexico No.209 jersey with “DIOGO JOTA,” who was also his former teammate at Wolverhampton.

USMNT HAD CHANCES TO TIE BUT AGMEYANG MISSES

The UMSNT had a chance to tie the match, but Patrick Agyemang fell short.

Furthermore, his short-range shot due to a blocked by Mexican goalkeeper Luis Malagon.

Moreover, USMNT team captain Tim Ream was “disappointed” to lose, while Jimenez cited El Tri’s urgency to win the Gold Cup.

The win marks Mexico defending its Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football title.

Incidentally, El Tri last defended the CONCACAF title in back-to-back fashion in 2009 and 2011.

“We came from behind and are leaving with the title,” Jimenez said.

“It’s great and important to clinch the crown a summer before the World Cup. It’s something we’ve been trying to do since the tournament began,” he added.

The win marks Mexico defending its Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football title.
