BABAR AZAM REPLACES SHAHEEN SHAH AFRIDI IN CAPTAINCY POST
Azam will take over from Shaheen Shah Afridi, who took on the captaincy role in the T201 tournament, ESPNcricinfo reported.
The 29-year-old batter returns from his old position after he reluctantly stepped down in November last year.
Azam, at the time, was replaced by Afridi upon the recommendation of the PCB.
The PCB selection panel eventually reinstated him almost five months later.
“Following unanimous recommendation from the PCB’s selection committee, chairman Mohsin Naqvi has appointed Baar Azam as white-ball (ODI ant T201) captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team,” the PCB said on X.
AFRIDI FURIOUS ON PCB WEBSITE QUOTES ATTRIBUTED TO HIM
Azam’s re-appointment came after Afridi was furious about a PCB statement on its website that carried quotes attributed to him.
However, Afridi did not make such statements about Azam as carried by the PCB website, which said that the former supported the latter’s return as captain.
“As a team player, it is my duty to back our captain, Babar Azam. I have played under his captaincy and have nothing but respect for him,” Afridi allegedly said.
The PCB’s lack of communication in transferring the captaincy’s reins back to Azam is likely yto strain relations between him and Afridi.
