Sabalenka named WTA Player of the Year; Navarro also honored

Aryna Sabalenka was named the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Player of the Year on Monday on a night Emma Navarro was also honored.

SABALENKA NAMED WTA’S TOP PLAYER CAPPED BY WORLD NO.1 RANKING, TWO GRAND SLAM TITLES

Sabalenka was named as the WTA’s top player after capping 2024 by claiming the world No.1 ranking.

Furthermore, the 26-year-old Belarussian received the WTA’s Player of the award for the first time in her career this year.

Moreover, she went 56-14 this season highlighted by major wins at the Australian Open in January and the US Open in September.

Sabalenka eventually surpassed Iga Swiatek as world No.1 in October en route to collecting nearly USD10 million in prize money.

The Belarussian was coming off a visit at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix over the weekend.

NAVARRO ALSO HONORED, WINS AS MOST IMPROVED PLAYER

Moreover, Navarro was also honored after she won as Most Improved Player.

Furthermore, the 33-year-old American barged into the WTA’s top 10 after taking a deep run at the US Open.

Navarro ousted defending champion Coco Gauff in Flushing Meadows in the fourth round.

However, she lost to Sabalenka in the semifinals.

Navarro rose from No.32 at the start of the year to No.8 entering 2025.

BADOSA, SU, ERRANI, PAOLINI SHARE WTA SPOTLIGHT

Furthermore, Paula Badosa, Lulu Sun, Sara Errani, and Jasmine Paolini shared the WTA spotlight with Sabalenka and Navarro.

Moreover, Badosa was honored as Comeback Player of the year after she bounced back from a back injury in 2023.

The 27-year-old Spaniard worked her way up to No.12 after she claimed a title in Washington and reaching the US Open quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Sun was named Newcomer of the Year, while the doubles pair of Errabiu and Paolini were tapped as Doubles Team of the Year.

Sun skyrocketed from outside the top 200 to a career-best No.39 in the rankings due to a quarterfinals finish as a qualifier at a Wimbledon qualifier in July.

The 23-year-old also placed runner-up at the Monterrey Open in August.

Errani and Paolini copped a doubles gold medal for Italy at the Paris Olympics.

They would later helping their country win the Billie Jean Cup.
