Swiatek keeps women’s WTA list, surpasses 10,000 ranking points

Iga Swiatek remained as world No.1 in women’s tennis and has collected over 10,000 ranking points for the first time.

The 22-year-old Polish superstar boosted her stranglehold in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) list released on Monday. Swiatek also got 10,300 ranking points, crossing the 10,000-point barrier for the first time in 11 months.

Following her recent triumph in Doha, Swiatek topped the 9,770 ranking points she collected last month. The Warsaw native’s latest win at the Qatar Open was elevated from a WTA 500 event to a WTA 1000 event.

That raised more WTA points for Swiatek, who reached 10,000 points in her 28th career week. She reached the mark for 27 straight weeks, from September 12, 2022, to March 19, 2023.

It was that time when Swiatek failed to defend her Indian Wells title after losing in the semifinals.

Swiatek was the second female player after Ashleigh Barty to reach 10,000 points or more in their career. Barty collected those points for 10 weeks in 2021.

The Pole defeated Elena Rybakina, 7-6(8), 6-2, in the final to claim the Doha title and break a three-game losing streak to her Russian-born Kazakhstani opponent.

“I’m happy that I kept working and just didn’t really think about too many stuff during this week,” Swiatek said.
