Real Madrid vs Barcelona rivalry: How it all began

The Real Madrid vs Barcelona rivalry began in 1902 with the “Concurso Madrid de Foot-Ball,” also known as the Copa de la Coronacion.

Barcelona was founded in 1899, and Real Madrid followed suit three years later, the same year ‘El Clásico” was about to begin.

Givemesport.com reported that Barcelona was uprooted as a symbol of Catalan nationalism, while Real Madrid represents Spanish nationalism.

During the 1930s, Francisco Franco, head of the Spanish state, sought to homogenize the Spanish state before deciding to ban the Catalan and Basque languages.

Barcelona were thus forced to remove the Catalan flag from their crest, and Franco’s troops executed club president Josep Sunyol on August 6, 1936.

Rivalry intensifies during the 1940s and 1950s

The Real Madrid vs Barcelona rivalry reached intense levels during the post-war years, as both clubs started to establish dominance in Spanish football.

Real Madrid were soon overshadowed by Franco’s prominent presence on the pitch during 1943.

In the final of the Copa del Generalismo, which was named after Franco himself, Real Madrid defeated Barcelona, 11-1.

“The game was to be much more than a sporting duel,” historian Joan Barau told Goal.

It was during the 1950s when Laszlo Kubala charmed his Barcelona fans, while Alfredo Di Stefano, Francisco Gento, and Ferenc Puskas formed a legendary core for Madrid.

Alfredo Di Stefano was involved in a tug-of-war between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona that resulted in him splitting time playing for both teams.

Barcelona, Real Madrid in tug-of-war over Alfredo Di Stefano

Barcelona and Real Madrid got involved in a dispute to acquire the services of Alfredo Di Stefano during the 1950s.

Di Stefano was playing for Millonario F.C. in Colombia at the time, but Colombia’s status as a “rebel league” outside of FIFA’s system made things complicated.

Due to Colombia’s “rebel league” status, Di Stefano remained under contract with his previous club, River Plate, which allowed both Madrid and Barcelona to pursue bids for his signature.

FIFA initially favored Barcelona in signing Di Stefano, but the Spanish Football Association obstructed the process, complicating the transfer.

The dispute culminated in a compromise: Di Stefano played for both clubs in alternate seasons, first joining Real Madrid in 1953–54, then Barcelona in 1954–55, though ultimately, he remained at Real Madrid after Barcelona withdrew from the agreement.

‘El Clasico’ rises from 1980s to become a global spectacle

‘El Clásico’ reached its golden age in the 1980s, when Barcelona’s Jordan Cruyff, a star player in the 1970s, returned as coach.

He would later endear himself to football fans as he implemented his visionary “Total Football” philosophy.

On the other hand, Emilio Butragueno, Michel, and Hugo Sanchez led Real Madrid’s “Quinta de Buitre” generation that dominated La Liga at the time.

El Clásico slowly transformed into a global spectacle during this decade with the rise of television broadcasts.

Luis Figo is another players to split time for both teams, first with FC Barcelona in 1995 before going to Real Madrid in 2000.

Luis Figo’s transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid marks the 2000s era

One of the well-known transfers associated with the rivalry during the 2000s was the transfer of Luis Figo from Barcelona to Real Madrid.

The Portuguese footballer was offered a £2 million contract in 2000 by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who was seeking victory in the club elections.

Figo’s agent confirmed the offer, but the winger claimed Perez was lying.

However, Figo joined Real Madrid after Barcelona refused to pay the “penalty” to keep Figo at the club, completing one of the shocking moves in the league.

Real Madrid’s ‘Galacticos’ project takes on Ronaldinho; Messi faces Ronaldo

Real Madrid featured its “Galacticos” project, composed of Zinedine Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo Nazario, and David Beckham for most of the 2000s.

Barcelona countered by starring Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi in the later stages of that decade.

The rivalry took a different turn in 2009, when Cristiano Ronaldo was signed by Real Madrid.

That led to an intense rivalry between Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who are also among the top 10 footballers with the most followers on Instagram.

Fans would get to watch El Clásico to decide which club wins La Liga and Copa del Rey titles during the height of the Ronaldo-Messi rivalry.

Player duels often defined El Clásico, none more celebrated than the one between Messi and Ronaldo:
