KARTHIK TO RETIRE AFTER 16 IPL SEASONS
Karthik is stepping away from the IPL after missing only two matches in his 16-season career. The 39-year-old is only one of seven cricketers to play in the IPL since it opened in 2008.
Karthik will play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore for his last season. The wicket-keeper-batter struggled in the 2023 IPL season with only 140 runs overall with an average of just over 11.
In contrast, Karthik enjoyed his best season in 2022, collecting 330 runs in 16 matches. Those numbers enabled him to tally an average of 55 and a strike rate of 183.33.
BROADCASTING CAREER AWAITS KARTHIK
Karthik won’t miss the sport completely, as he has been trying out broadcasting on the side even while he’s playing. The Tamil Nadu native provided commentary at the World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand in 2021.
Additionally, Karthik has also been doing commentary in the ongoing India-England Test series.
Karthik is expected to play in Royal Challengers’ IPL debut. The Challengers will face defending champions Chennai Super Kings in Chepauk on March 23.
