Jeremie Frimpong poked fun at Arsenal while celebrating Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga success with former London side Granit Xhaka.
Xabi Alonso created history as the Spanish tactician ended Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign as German champions. Leverkusen lifted the trophy on Sunday night in stunning fashion with a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen.
Xhaka, who spent almost an up and down decade in north London, left last summer, put his side 2-0 up on the hour before Florian Wirtz scored a 22-minute hat-trick as the celebrations got into full flow.
The celebration continued in the German side’s dressing room, with Alonso drenched in beer by his players and Frimpong grabbing Xhaka on Instagram Live.
The Switzerland international came agonizingly close to winning the Premier League in his final season with Arenal last season, and he is going one better this term in Germany.
With his arm around Xhaka, Frimpong said: ‘Granit, you came from Arsenal and you won it here! My f*****g G!’
The former Arsenal captain, Xhaka, said, ‘It’s difficult to find the right words [to sum up his emotions]. To come back after my first season in the league is unbelievable.
While Xhaka’s new team sealed a title, Arsenal suffered a shock defeat and a significant blow to the title chase.
Mikel Arteta’s side fell to a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa, thanks to goals from Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins. They missed the chance to return to the top of the Premier League.
With Liverpool also losing at home to Crystal Palace earlier that afternoon, Manchester City is in control of the title race, two points clear of their rivals with six games left to play.
