STEFANOS TSITSIPAS TOPS CARBALLES BAENA TO REACH QUARTERS
Tsitsipas pulled off a 7-5, 6-3 win over Roberto Carballes Baena to reach the quarters in Barcelona.
The No.5 seed out-steadied Baena in the opening set before the Greek star sustained the momentum to finish off his opponent.
“There were no easy points coming my way. I’m happy that I delivered and came up with some great tennis,” Tsitsipas said.
The win pushed Tsitsipas to a last-eight match against Facundo Diaz Acosta, who came back to defeat Fabian Marozsan, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The world No.7 hopes to add the Barcelona Open title to his collection after claiming the Monte Carlo Masters title last Sunday.
RUUD DOMINATES THOMPSON, JOINS TSITSIPAS IN LAST EIGHT
Ruud followed Tsitsipas’s lead by dominating Jordan Thompson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, for a last-eight appearance.
The Norwegian nailed his 26th victory this year, moving him ahead of reigning Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner.
Ruud, who lost to Tsitsipas in the Monte Carlo final, hopes to go on a deep run in Barcelona after losing in Los Cabos and Acapulco.
The world No.6 is eying his fourth final this year.
Ruud is scheduled to face world No.40 Italian Matteo Arnaldi, who ousted Marco Trungelliti, 6-3, 6-0.
DE MINAUR OUSTED FILS AFTER TOPPLING NADAL
Alex de Minaur followed Rafael Nadal on the sidelines after absorbing a 5-7, 2-6 loss to Arthur Fils.
World No.36 Fils held control of the match to deny de Minaur, who toppled Nadal in the second round.
Cameron Norrie ended the campaign of Roberto Bautista Agut, 6-4, 6-3, for his 200th career win.
The loss prevented Bautista Agut from following up his 400th tour-level win a day earlier.
Dusan Lajovic needed three sets in another match to turn back Alejandro Davidovich, 7-6(10), 3-6, 6-1.
Aside from Nadal, No.2 seed Andrey Rublev was eliminated in the second round while top seed Carlos Alcaraz withdrew due to an injury.
