MURRAY WITHDRAWS FROM OLYMPICS MEN’S SINGLES TO FOCUS ON DOUBLES
Furthermore, Murray withdraws from the Olympic men’s singles tennis competitions.
He is expected to focus on the doubles event with Dan Evans.
“I’ve taken the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan (Evans),” Murray said in a statement.
“Really looking forward to getting started and representing GB (Great Britain) one more time,” he added.
The former world No.1 continues to recover from a back injury.
This forced him to miss the Wimbledon men’s singles draw.
Moreover, Murray also felt GB had a better chance of a medal in men’s doubles, thus his decision to play in that event.
Therefore, Murray and Evans are expected to learn their first-round opponent in the draw on Thursday.
SINNER PULLS OUT OF SINGLES DUE TO TONSILITIS
Moreover, Sinner has decided to pull out of the men’s singles due to tonsilitis.
The 22-year-old Italian was advised by his doctor to sit out the Summer Olympic Games in the French capital.
“Missing the Olympics is a big disappointment, given that it was one of my main goals this season,” Sinner wrote in Italian on social media.
“I couldn’t wait to have the honor of representing my country in this extremely important event,” he added.
The world No.1 won the Australian Open in January.
Sinner took the top spot over Novak Djokovic after he reached the French Open semifinals last month.
World No.207 Andrea Vavassori will replace Sinner in the men’s singles and by Luciano Darderi in doubles alongside Lorenzo Musetti.
Sinner’s withdrawal leaves Djokovic and reigning Wimbledon champion and world No.3 Carlos Alcaraz as the top draws.
COCO GAUFF NAMED AS TEAM USA FEMALE FLAG-BEARER FOR OLYMPICS
Meanwhile, US Open champion Coco Gauff has been named as Team USA’s female flag-bearer for the Olympics opening ceremony.
She will join NBA superstar LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, who was earlier named as the male flag-bearer.
The 20-year-old Gauff will be the first US tennis player to carry the flag, three years after she skipped the Tokyo Olympics.
Gauff was tested positive for COVID-19 at the time.
“I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the opening ceremony,” Gauff said in a statement.
“I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron (James) as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is,” she added.
Moreover, the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee said Gauff and James got the nod through a vote of their fellow US athletes.
