Carvajal suffers serious knee injury
The defender was stretchered off in stoppage time after injuring his right knee.
Madrid said in a statement that Carvajal “has been diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, a ruptured external collateral ligament, and a ruptured popliteus tendon in his right leg.”
Carvajal, 32, also confirmed in a separate statement on Instagram that he will need surgery.
“Serious cruciate ligament injury confirmed, I’ll have to go through surgery and be off the pitch for a few months,” the defender wrote.
“Already looking forward to starting recovery and coming back like a beast. Thank you so much for your messages, I feel very loved.”
Carvajal will remain in Madrid
Despite the season-ending injury, Madrid announced that they would be extending Carvajal’s stay at the Santiago Bernabeu until June 2026.
“Real Madrid would like to show him all its support and affection and wishes him a speedy recovery so that we can enjoy his football on the pitch again as soon as possible,” the club said in a statement.
Carvajal first joined Madrid in 2002 and progressed through all of their youth system categories, from Alevín B to Castilla in 2010.
The Spanish international moved to Bayer Leverkusen in 2012, before returning to Real Madrid the following summer.
The right-back has since established himself as one of the team’s reliable veteran, making 427 appearances for the Spanish giants.
He has scored 14 goals and provided 65 assists, contributing to Real Madrid’s success in winning four La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys, and six Champions League trophies.
