Kyrgios suffers abdominal injury before Australian Open
The 29-year-old was scheduled to play in the exhibition alongside Novak Djokovic on Thursday.
However, Kyrgios revealed on Instagram that an ultrasound showed a grade one strain.
The Australian assured fans he will be fit for the Australian Open starting on Sunday.
“Unfortunately won’t be able to play my good friend (Djokovic) this Thursday as I’ve had an ultrasound on my abdominal and have a grade 1 strain,” Kyrgios wrote.
“Will be resting and doing everything I can to be OK by the Aus Open.”
Kyrgios making his comeback
Kyrgios made his competitive return in men’s doubles in Brisbane, teaming up with 24-time major winner Djokovic.
His singles comeback, however, ended in a loss to French star Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard during his long-awaited return the previous night.
Career-threatening wrist and knee injuries, which required three rounds of surgery, had sidelined Kyrgios for 18 months.
Despite this, Kyrgios expressed confidence, saying that he “knows his body” and will take the necessary precautions to ensure he can compete in the first Grand Slam of the year.
“I’ve still got five days up my sleeve,” said Kyrgios.
“I’m probably not going to serve for the next couple of days, I’ve got a couple of practices scheduled and I’ll do everything I can.”
“It’s not too serious. I’ll just take it day by day and give myself the best chance.”
The draw for the Australian Open will take place on Thursday, with Kyrgios granted a protected ranking of No. 21.
His last appearance at the Open was in 2022, where he reached the second round in singles and claimed the doubles title alongside fellow Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Later that year, he advanced to his first Grand Slam singles final, falling to Djokovic at Wimbledon.
