SABALENKA IN THIRD MELBOURNE FINAL AFTER DEFEATING BADOSA
Sabalenka is in her third final in Melbourne after she defeated Badosa, 6-4, 6-2, in their women’s singles semifinals match.
Furthermore, the Belarussian world No.1 overcame a slow start to dominate her good friend Badosa and stay on course to claim her third-straight Australian Open title.
Moreover, Sabalenka is seeking to become the first woman to win three consecutive titles in Melbourne since 1999.
“I have goose bumps. I’m so proud of myself. I’m proud of my team that we were able to put ourselves in such a situation,” Sabalenka said.
“If I’ll be able to put myself in the history (books), it’s going to mean a lot. it’s going to mean the world to me,” she added.
Badosa is trying to make the most of her first semifinals in a major.
She ousted world No.3 Coco Gauff of the US in the quarters.
But Sabalenka had other plans, and the Spanish world No.11 admitted her friend will be tough to beat in the final.
“If she plays like this, I mean, we can already give her the trophy,” the American said.
KEYS STUNS SWIATEK FOR HER FIRST FINAL IN MELBOURNE
Moreover, Keys stunned Poland’s world No.2 Swiatek, 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (8), in the other semifinal to earn a matchup against Sabalenka.
Furthermore, the 29-year-old American overcame a 6-5 deficit in the third set to turn things around.
Keys hopes to sustain an 11-match winning streak.
This included a title at a tuneup event in Adelaide.
“I felt like I was just fighting to stay in it … It was so up and down and so many big points,” Keys said.
“It just became who can get that final point and who can be a little bit better than the other one,” she added.
DJOKOVIC SEEKS FINAL VS ZVEREV; SINNER TAKES ON SHELTON
Furthermore, Novak Djokovic is seeking another final at Melbourne when he faces German Alexander Zverev in the men’s singles semifinals.
Moreover, defending champion and world No.1 Jannik Sinner of Italy takes on American Ben Shelton in the other semifinal.
Djokovic hopes to recover from a groin injury that bothered him during his quarterfinals win over Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.
“I will try to do as much as I possibly can with my recovery team, with my physio today, tomorrow, the next few days,” the Serbian said.
Sinner is tagged as a favorite on this one, as the Italian has beaten Shelton in their last four head-to-head matchups.
