MESSI, ENZO LEAD ARGENTINA’S 29-PLAYER COPA AMERICA LINEUP
Messi headlines an Argentina squad in what could be his final Copa America appearance.
The 36-year-old forward helped the Albiceleste beat Brazil, 1-0, in the previous Copa edition, for his first international trophy in the tournament.
The 23-year-old Fernandez made the lineup despite coming off groin surgery in April that sidelined for most of his club’s season.
“As long as I feel good and I can continue to deliver, I’m going to (continue playing for Argentina),” Messi said.
“All I’m thinking about today is getting to the Copa America and being able to play in it,” he added in the documentary “Champions, A Year Later.”
DI MARIA, MARTINEZ, ALVAREZ IN; DYBALA MISSES CUT
Messi’s fellow 36-year-old veteran Angel Di Maria also made it to the lineup, joining Emiliano Martinez, Lisandro Martinez, and Julian Alvarez.
However, Paulo Dybala was left out of the roster.
The 30-year-old Roma defender collected 16 goals and 10 assists in 38 matches.
He also helped the Italian side reach the Europa League semifinals.
ARGENTINA JOINS PERU, CHILE, CANADA IN GROUP A
Argentina will join Peru, Chile, and Canada in Group A in Copa America 2024.
Scaloni has until June 12 to trim his 29-player provisional lineup to just 26 for the main tournament.
The La Albiceleste is scheduled to play in friendlies against Ecuador on Juna 9 and Guatemala on June 14.
Argentina will open its Copa America 2024 title defense against Canada on June 21, followed by Chila (June 26) and Peru on June 30.
Meanwhile, Messi remains non-committal about playing in the next World Cup, saying he needs to see if he’s up for the task.
“Then time will tell whether I’ll be at the World Cup or not. I’m going to be at an age (39) that normally doesn’t allow me to play in the World Cup,” he said.
