Tebas calls out FIFA

FIFA’s inaugural Club World Cup will take place from June 15 to July 13, 2025, in the United States.

The Club World Cup’s addition, along with UEFA’s expanded club competition, makes this season the longest club campaign ever.

Tebas said that neither the leagues nor the FIFPRO Players’ Union wanted the Club World Cup initially.

“FIFA president, you know that you have not sold the audiovisual rights for the budget you said for that Club World Cup,” Tebas said, while speaking at the Forum of the European Union of Clubs in Brussels. “You know that you do not have the sponsorships for that Club World Cup as you had budgeted.

“You know that the leagues and the players’ football unions we don’t want that Club World Cup. Withdraw that Club World Cup now.”

“If you are going to use FIFA funds to finance the money that is missing from the promise you have made to the clubs, you are taking it away from all those federations or places that FIFA says it is there to help. We are talking about more of €1.5 billion that will have to be drawn from that fund.”

FIFpro files complaint against FIFA

Meanwhile, players’ union FIFpro and top European leagues filed a complaint against FIFA over the “abusive” international match calendar.

Tebas said Monday has been “one of the most important days in football.”

“Today is one of the most important days in football,” he said.

“For me, there’s been two historical days in football. One in 2019 when we stopped a reform of the Super League and today we’ve given a very important step in what we believe is the path of changing the governance of football institutions and we’re not going to let this opportunity get away.”

ESPN reported that FIFA believes the Club World Cup will have a minimal impact on the football calendar or on player welfare.

Some players have raised concerns over the increasing number of fixtures, including Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal and Thibaut Courtois.

Both Carvajal and Courtois are out with injuries.
