For the second time locking horns in a qualifying, Vietnam suffered from a defeat at regional rival Indonesia.
The Garudas repeated the same scoreline from their encounter at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, which brought them four points, one ahead of their Southeast Asian rivals, with the two to meet again in Hanoi on Tuesday.
The first half was a cagey affair. Both teams opted for safety, limiting chances at both ends of the pitch.
Back on the field after injury, Nguyen Hoang Duc had the first opportunity but was forced to the line by his marker, failing to trouble Indonesian goalkeeper Muhammad Adisatryo.
Rafael Struick then embarked on a run before cutting in from the left, but his shot didn’t have the power to trouble the lanky Nguyen Filip for Vietnam’s goal.
Towards the end of the first half, there was a nervous moment when Adisatryo fumbled a routine catch. Still, luckily for him, Vietnamese players were nowhere near to capitalize on his mistake.
Thailand draw 1-1 with Korea in the World Cup qualifier.
The Southeast Asian powerhouse stunned one of the region’s strongest yet struggling sides as it secured a 1-1 draw against South Korea in a World Cup qualifying match on Thursday night.
The result disappointed a favored Korean side playing its first match since coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s sacking. Belated revelations of a physical bust-up between two of their stars, Lee Kang-in and captain Son Heung-min, have further sapped morale.
With under-23 coach Hwang Sun-hong taking charge following the dismissal of Klinsmann, the hosts took the lead three minutes before half-time at Seoul World Cup Stadium.
One the finest attackers of current football, Son was the man on the spot, turning in from close range to give the hosts a third qualifying win from as many matches.
But the capacity crowd was stunned into silence at 61 minutes when Suphanat Mueanta stayed onside to rifle a shot past exposed goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo to give Thailand the equalizer.
South Korea had several chances to score the winner. Still, they should have taken advantage of Thailand’s increasingly overworked defense.
Son and co remain atop Group C in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualification with seven points, while 101st-ranked Thailand remains in second place with four points.
There are nine groups of four in the current second qualifying round. The two best teams from each group will advance to the third round.
The two sides will meet again on Tuesday at Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok.
