Viana goes to Manchester City
Viana replaces Txiki Begiristain following the announcement that the Spaniard will step down at the end of the 2024-25 season.
Under Txiki, City won seven Premier League titles, the Champions League for the first time, two FA Cups, and six EFL Cups.
Begiristain played an instrumental in bringing Pep Guardiola to the club as manager in 2016.
“Txiki will leave his current post following the club’s involvement in this summer’s Fifa Club World Cup and will be succeeded by Hugo Viana of Sporting CP,” City said in a statement.
Viana will assume his role in the summer of 2025.
“Viana will begin his full-time role in the summer of 2025, but will collaborate with Txiki in the preceding months to ensure a smooth transition.”
“We look forward to paying tribute to Txiki’s outstanding contribution to Manchester City at the end of the season.”
Who is Viana?
Viana spent time at Sporting CP, Newcastle United and Valencia as a player.
He also earned 29 caps for Portugal between 2001 and 2012.
Sporting hired Vianna as director of football in 2018, and helped the club win the Portuguese title in 2021 and 2024.
In addition, he is credited with bringing in Ruben Amorim as manager in 2020.
