SINNER BEATS SHELTON, SPOILS OPPONENT’S 22ND BIRTHDAY IN SHANGHAI
Furthermore, Sinner beats Shelton, 6-4, 7-6(1), to spoil his opponent’s 22nd birthday in Shanghai.
It was a vengeful win for the Italian, who lost to the American world No.16 in the same tournament last year.
Moreover, the 23-year-old world No.1 improved to 4-1 in his head-to-head matchup with Shelton.
“Happy how I handled this situation. It’s obviously a position where I was last year,” Sinner said.
“And where I am right now, it’s different, so I’m happy to be in the position where I am,” he added.
The Italian will next play world No.5 Daniil Medvedev, who won 7-6(3), 6-3 over Stefanos Tsitsipas.
TSITSIPAS VENTS FRUSTRATION AT CHAIR UMPIRE AFTER LOSING TO MEDVEDEV
Moreover, Tsitsipas vented his frustration at the chair umpire after losing to Medvedev.
The 10th-seeded Greek accused Fergus Murphy of having “no clue about tennis.”
Furthermore, Tsitsipas slammed Murphy for calling a time violation against him in the second set.
He later asked to “talk to a supervisor” amid his lengthy rant against Murphy, who suggested the Greek should “watch more matches.”
“Have you never played tennis in your life?” the Greek asked. “You have no clue about tennis, it seems like.”
“I’m not as good as you are, but I’ve played,” Murphy said.
GOFFIN OUSTS ZVEREV, DEDICATES BIG WIN TO NEWBORN DAUGHTER
Furthermore, David Goffin pulled off an inspired 6-4, 7-5 upset win over world No.2 Alexander Zverev.
Moreover, the 33-year-old Belgian later dedicated his big win to his newborn daughter, Emma.
This was Goffin’s first tournament since he and his wife, Stephanie Tuccito, welcomed Emma on September 17.
“I wanted to show my daughter that I can be a good tennis player, so I will try to find a few more years just to show her that I can still play tennis,” Goffin said.
“Even if she doesn’t realize yet, hopefully, she will come and watch a little bit,” he added.
The former world No.7 dropped to as low as No.134 in February before working his way back to become No.66 when he entered Shanghai.
