US Open: World ranking #2 Novak Djokovic started pursuing a 24th grands slam title with a comfortable win over Alexandre Muller.
The Serbian secured a decent victory 6-0 6-2 6-4, winning his first eight games in a row to prepare for the clash with unseeded Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles in round two.
What happened – Djokovic beat Muller in straight games
Djokovic broke at the start of the second set on his third break point of the game before another straightforward hold as Muller was thoroughly outclassed by the opponent.
However, world no. 76 finally got on the board, and his effort won applause from the crowd on the stands of Arthur Ashe.
The three-time champion in New York was impressed by Muller’s determination. However, it was just a matter of time before Nole broke back almost immediately before serving out the set.
Muller seemed to have found his way into the match and had three consecutive love holds as the third set went with serve until 3-3.
Djokovic stepped up the gears, and the writing was on the wall as he broke in the next game before a final decisive break for victory.
The Serb, gunning for a record-equalling 24th grand slam singles title, will face unseeded Bernabe Zapata Miralles in round two following the Spaniard’s 6-4 6-4 6-3 win over Ethan Quinn.
