ZVEREV NEEDS TO WIN MAJOR TITLE ‘IN THE NEXT 18 MONTHS,’ SAYS BECKER
Zverev needs to win his first major title “in the next 18 months,” says Becker, as the opposition becomes stronger.
Furthermore, the world No.2’s best window to end his thirst for a Grand Slam should happen Down under later this month.
Moreover, Becker is convinced it will only get difficult for Zverev to reach the pinnacle of the majors.
“He (Zverev) is now at an age where he has to do it,” the retired German tennis legend said in the Becker Petkovic podcast.
“For me, Sascha has to win the Grand Slam he longs for in the next 18 months,” he added.
BECKER SAYS SINNER, ALCARAZ EMERGENCE COULD MAKE WINNING MAJORS TOUGHER
Moreover, Becker says the emergence of Italian world No.1 Jannik Sinner and Spanish world No.3 Carlos Alcaraz could make winning majors tougher for other players.
Furthermore, the 57-year-old six-time major winner also cited rising stars.
He said the likes of Jack Draper and Ben Shelton should convince the younger German compatriot to step up now.
Zverev came into the scene at the time of the “Big 3” of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
Federer and Nadal have retired and Djokovic slowed down last year.
However, Sinner and Alcaraz are threatening to build a rivalry of their own.
Incidentally, Sinner and Alcaraz combined to share the four majors with two titles each last year.
SASCHA SHOULD CARRY MOMENTUM OF PARIS MASTERS TITLE WIN
Furthermore, the player also known as “Sascha” should carry the momentum of his Paris Masters title win later last year.
Moreover, Zverev also reached the semifinals of the ATP Finals last month.
Becker stressed that Zverev fails to win in 18 months, “it will be much more difficult than it is now.”
The German nearly won a major last year before he yielded to Alcaraz in the French Open final.
At the Australia Open, Zverev reached the semifinals first in 2020 and also last year before losing to Daniil Medvedev.
Should he win in Melbourne and Sinner struggles Down Under, Zverev may also close the gap in the race for world No.1 after the first major of the year.
