Combat Sports: Key to Vietnam’s Medal Surge
In addition to swimming and athletics, martial arts remain a traditional strength:
- Karate, Taekwondo, Wushu, Judo, Ju-jitsu, Muaythai, Pencak Silat, Kickboxing and others form a dense cluster of medal events.
- Many of these sports have multiple weight categories and forms (sparring, kata/poomsae, performance), giving Vietnam room to make a significant leap up the medal standings during the mid-Games period.
These disciplines are widely considered the backbone of Vietnam’s push toward its overall medal target.
SEA Games 33 – Medal standings
As of the update around 15 November 2025, the early medal standings (from the first completed events) show:
- Thailand – 1 Gold, 0 Silver, 0 Bronze (1 total)
- Indonesia – 0 Gold, 1 Silver, 0 Bronze (1 total)
- Vietnam – 0 Gold, 0 Silver, 1 Bronze (1 total)
- Philippines – 0 Gold, 0 Silver, 1 Bronze (1 total)
5–11. Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Laos, Brunei, Timor-Leste and Cambodia – yet to win a medal
Although the tally is only symbolic at this stage, it underlines Thailand’s intent to lead from the front as host nation.
Host Thailand Aims for Dominance, Vietnam Targets Top 3
With a delegation of 1,807 athletes competing in all 50 sports, Thailand has made no secret of its ambition: to dominate the SEA Games 2025 medal table and even challenge the all-time record of 205 gold medals that Vietnam set on home soil in 2022.
Vietnam, by contrast, sends 841 athletes across 37 sports, ranking only 7th out of 11 in terms of delegation size (out of a total of 9,366 athletes at the Games).
Given that context, the target of a Top 3 finish with around 110 gold medals is both realistic and still highly ambitious.
Just over two years ago, at SEA Games 32 in Cambodia, Vietnam brought 1,663 athletes—only fewer than Thailand and Indonesia—and topped the overall table with 136 golds, ahead of Thailand (108), Indonesia (87) and the hosts Cambodia (81).
