Sharma ready to take the mantle
Sharma, 36, replaced Virat Kohli as India’s full-time captain after the latter relinquished his role in Tests and T20Is in 2022.
Previous reports said that then-BCCI president Ganguly had an alleged rift with Kohli.
Nonetheless, Ganguly clarified that the BCCI asked Kohli to reconsider his decision to step down as T20I captain.
Ganguly said he chose Sharma as team captain due to his impressive run in the Indian Premier League.
“Look at the way he captained in the World Cup. Taking India to the final. I think India was the best team in the competition till they lost the final. So he is a good captain, IPL trophies,” Ganguly said of Sharma.
“I am not surprised by the way he led. He became the captain when I was the BCCI president, and I am not surprised by the way he has led the team.”
“I made him the Indian captain because I saw the talent in him, and I am not surprised by what he has done,”
Impressive World Cup run
Rohit led India to the World Cup final last year on home soil but fell to the eventual champion Australia.
He also steered India to a 17th straight Test series home win against England to claim the 3-1 series lead.
India will try to cap off the fifth and last Test match in Dharamsala on March 7.
