SEA Games 33 medal update: host Thailand leading, with Vietnam and Indonesia just behind.
The 33rd Southeast Asian Games are officially underway in Thailand, with Bangkok and Chonburi hosting thousands of athletes in a celebration of regional sporting excellence. From 9–20 December 2025, competitors from across Southeast Asia are chasing continental glory across 50 medal sports, ranging from Olympic disciplines to beloved traditional events.

This year marks a symbolic return: Thailand hosted the very first Southeast Asian Peninsular Games in 1959, and now welcomes the region once again for an expanded, modernised version featuring 13,657 athletes.

Ten nations continue in competition:
Thailand (hosts), Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Brunei Darussalam, and Timor-Leste.
Cambodia, however, withdrew on 10 December citing safety-related concerns.

First Medals Awarded
Badminton became the first sport to award medals, with the losing semi-finalists in the team events receiving bronze. Singapore clinched the very first medal of SEA Games 2025 in the women’s team event — marking an early milestone in the overall standings.

Thailand edged Vietnam at Women’s Volleyball final
In the historic final at the 2025 SEA Games, the Vietnam Women’s Volleyball team once again showed those familiar weaknesses. However, the most decisive factor behind the defeat to Thailand did not primarily lie in the first reception, back-court defence, or even psychological pressure. Thailand itself was under immense mental strain in the fifth set.

At the same time, Vietnam had already staged a comeback in the fourth, built a commanding 10–5 lead, and even held four championship points in the deciding set before ultimately succumbing to a dramatic turnaround.
SEA Games 33 Medal update – Thai leading
Host nation Thailand continues to lead the 33rd SEA Games medal tally with 145 golds at the end of the sixth competition day Monday, while Vietnam are falling further behind Indonesia.
On the medal tally, Vietnam, with 40 gold medals, are 12 less than second-place Indonesia.

Vietnam will compete in nine athletics events on Tuesday, with Nguyen Thi Oanh aiming to win her 15th SEA Games gold medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
Fencing will start the competition on Tuesday. Vietnam won four fencing gold medals at the 2023 SEA Games.
SEA Games 33 medal update – Vietnamese athletics delivers successive gold medals
While host Thailand has been showing why they are the powerhouse of the regional competition, Vietnam has been rising up and putting high pressure.
Vietnamese athletics continued to boost the national delegation’s medal tally at the 33rd SEA Games by winning two more gold medals on December 15 and reaffirming its role as one of Viet Nam’s main gold medal sources.

Quach Thi Lan claimed gold in the women’s 400m hurdles, showcasing her experience and strong form, while Nguyen Trung Cuong dominated the men’s 3,000m steeplechase to secure another top podium finish.
Viet Nam also collected silver and bronze in the men’s 400m hurdles, won by Nguyen Duc Son and Le Quoc Huy, respectively.
Earlier, on December 13, the mixed 4x400m relay team of Le Ngoc Phuc, Nguyen Thi Hang, Nguyen Thi Ngoc and Ta Ngoc Tuong won gold and broke the SEA Games record. In the women’s 5,000m, Nguyen Thi Oanh successfully defended her title, bringing her SEA Games gold total to 13 and equalling the record held by Nguyen Thi Huyen.
Young athlete Le Thi Cam Tu also bagged silver in the women’s 200m and breaking a 15-year national record.
