World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev stunned in first match of French Open 2023 as he was defeated by Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild.
This year Roland Garros took the audiences to the first big surprise on the third day with Medveded’s defeat.
ATP’s 172nd Thiago Seyboth eliminated the second seed in style, 7-6 (5), 6-7(6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the match that last four hours and 15 minutes.
Medvedev had been expected to beat Seyboth – who was only making his first main draw appearance at the grand slam.
However, reality showed that the Brazilian came out the superior side, dominating the match with his Roger Federer-esque powerful forehand.
Seyboth won the opening set, but the Russian tennis player won the third set with ease before started to struggle with his consistency and it allowed Seyboth to recover as the Brazilian took the match to the deciding set and eventually turned the crowd in disbelief.
Medvedev is certainly not at his best on the surface but was coming into Roland Garros off the back of winning his first clay-court trophy at this year’s Italian Open. The best tennis player of the year, both in terms of titles (5) and matches won (39), left Paris through the back door.
He will now face either Quentin Halys or Guido Pella in the second round.
