Cricket World Cup 2023: Glenn Maxwell makes history as Australia thrashed Netherlands with the most significant winning margin of 309 runs at a World Cup.
The Australian all-rounder unleashed the fastest hundred in ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup history, building on a foundation set by David Warner’s century to help his side clinch a massive win over the Netherlands.
The winning margin of 309 runs is the largest ever at a Men’s Cricket World Cup and the second largest in ODIs.

Cricket World Cup 2023: Glenn Maxwell’s milestone
Warner and Steve Smith helped Australia make a strong start after opting to bat, with the duo helping post 66/1 after the first powerplay in Delhi on Wednesday.
And the Australian top order kicked on after that strong start to set up a large total, with Warner (104) forging solid partnerships with Smith (71) and Marnus Labuschagne (62).
Nobody could have predicted the extent of the damage, with Maxwell demolishing the Netherlands attack with a brutal display of hitting, registering by far the fastest-ever hundred seen at a Cricket World Cup, which we will discuss deeper below.
Maxwell’s ton came from just 40 balls, nine faster than the previous best at a Cricket World Cup, and included eight maximums.
Bas de Leede fared the worst of the Dutch bowlers, conceding 115 runs from his ten overs, the most expensive figures in ODI history.
Netherlands set out to restore some pride in the second innings but unraveled against a buoyant Australian bowling attack, who rattled through the batting line-up in just 21 overs.
Adam Zampa returned the best figures after the pace-bowling unit had dismantled the top order, with the spinner finishing with figures of 4/8 from three overs.
Zampa’s haul made him the tournament’s top wicket-taker so far.
The record margin of defeat gives Australia an enormous net run rate boost as they strengthen their grip on a top-four spot in the standings.
Maxwell masterclass: The fastest-ever World Cup century
Maxwell produced one of the most remarkable deaths-over batting ever seen in a One Day International, as the Australian number six pulverized the Netherlands attack in Delhi.
Maxwell’s extraordinary innings finished in the final over with his score of 106 from just 44 balls – a knock that featured nine fours and eight sixes.
And he brought up his century with one of those eight sixes, reaching his milestone off just 40 balls, setting a new record for the fastest hundred at a Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Maxwell didn’t just break the record; he smashed it, bettering the previous best, set by Aiden Markram against Sri Lanka earlier in this tournament, by nine balls.
